Rats are pretty much the bottom of the barrel for lots of people. Not for little Nadja Klier in her role as "Gritta von Rattenzuhausbeiuns". In the West, this successful DEFA children's movie was released under the title "Gritta vom Rattenschloss". The just about 300 rats in the movie had been bred especially for this purpose and were somewhat trained. The eleven-year old had to endure a bit of scuttling. Especially the master rat who wore an earring as a sign of its rank had a fixed place on her shoulder. Almost punky! When filming was finished after 52 days, Nadja was bestowed a gift from her colleagues on the set. A plush rat with black button eyes and a braided tail. If you looked closer, it had a hole in its ear. In which it wore an earring. Because this was supposed to be the master rat. When Nadja had grown up and become a photographer, she donated the animal to the Potsdam Film Museum.
